CENTURION VAUDE mit zwei Podestplätzen beim Cape Epic
Seit letztem Sonntag läuft das prestigeträchtige Mountainbike Etappenrennen Cape Epic in Südafrika und die Mountainbiker vom Team CENTURION VAUDE mischen vorne mit. Ein Prolog und vier Etappen sind bereits geschafft. Das Rennen ist heiß und schnell wie nie zuvor.
„Mit den Ergebnissen bis jetzt ist man zufrieden“, so Teamchef Richard Dämpfle. Beide Paarungen haben es je einmal als Drittplatzierte auf das Podium geschafft. Markus Kaufmann und Jochen Käß auf Etappe eins und Daniel Geismayr zusammen mit Gastfahrer Nicola Rohrbach am vierten Tag. Dominierend waren an den ersten Tagen die eigentlich auf Cross Country spezilaisierten Fahrer – “Kurzstrecken-Spezialisten”, welche sich aber im nacholympischen Jahr explizit auf die Cape Epic vorbereitet haben. So mischen der Weltmeister und Olympisieger Nino Schurter oder das Cannondale Team mit Manuel Fumic ganz vorne mit, wobei so Dämpfle, dass Profil mit kurzen Etappen und vielen fahrtechnisch schweren Singletrails diesen in die Karten spielt. Man ist gespannt, wie sich das Rennen hier mit der Länge noch weiter entwickeln wird.
In der Gesamtwertung liegt das Duo Geismayr/ Rohrbach auf Rang fünf noch aussichtsreich im Rennen. Beide sind sich einig, das dieses Jahr mit der Anzahl an Top Leuten, die Cape Epic hart wie nie ist. „Von Start an wird jeden Tag Vollgas gefahren, als ob nach der ersten Kurve das Ziel sei. So was gibt es bei Marathons oder Etappenrennen eher selten. Aber heute konnten wir das Tempo von Beginn an mitgehen, es läuft jeden Tag besser und das Podium heute war gut“, so der Österreicher Gaismayr im Ziel auf Etappe Nummer drei.
Die Cape Epic geht noch bis Sonntag und Dämpfle zeigt sich optimistisch, dass bei seinen Jungs noch etwas nach vorne geht. „Alle haben einen extremen Aufwand bei der Vorbereitung auf das Rennen betrieben. Andere Teams waren teils drei Monate vorher vor Ort, aber bis jetzt ist der Rennverlauf ein nicht zu erwartender. Selbst das Siegerteam von Bulls aus 2016, liegt mit Gesamtrang acht schon 20 Minuten zurück. Das wird noch spannend, ich glaube auch mit uns“, so der CENTURION VAUDE Teamchef.

The Story
OK, it’s the most famous glacier in the world. You can’t expect solitude here; every fifteen minutes a busload of tourists is released in the direction of the viewing platforms. And yet the sight of the Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia with its 4-km wide and 60 m high escarpment has something touching, something incomprehensible about it. It is a natural spectacle that takes your breath away and that instinctively describes the relationship between man and nature. Humility and tranquil joy of existence seizes every viewer.
The Photographer
Ralf Gantzhorn was born in 1964, holds a M.S. in Geology – and has even worked as a geologist (as an independent consultant in the contamination sector). He has been climbing since 1983 and working as a photographer since 1985. As a northern German, he is always torn between the far too distant mountains and the fresh sea air, but he’s found a compromise in Scandinavia, Scotland and Patagonia (where he has now spent over three years). He enjoys organizing trips in areas where unfamiliar vistas – which haven’t already been photographed 1000 times – lure from every corner. He often experiences his images as far too static, but then is pleased with the abundance of triangles in the structure and the fantastic light.

The picture was taken on the summit of Marmolada after an ascent of the Vinatzer/Messner on the south wall. We didn’t reach the summit until 10:00 p.m. so we bivouacke (planned) there. We woke up to this riot of color …
